This medium smudge fan is made from a pheasant wing, is set in cow hide handle and finished with a line of rabbit fur. The rabbit fur is from wild English rabbits which are managed as part of a wildlife conservation programme.
The pheasant is largely a ground dwelling bird, and loves open spaces where it can roam freely. This bird brings with it the energies of movement, expression and variety. Pheasant has a particular strut in its style, and the flamboyant eye popping colours of the male pheasant remind us that nature knows no end to its variety and creativity. They have an amazing ability to camouflage themselves and hide, with an unusual way to outwit its predators. It will lie low until they are really close and then flap their wings vigorously and give out a prominent staple call making the predator jump and delay the chase.

About the making of our smudge fans:
We only ever source our feathers and wings ethically, from birds which have died in their natural environment, and never from birds which have been shot.
Our feathers and wings come from birds which have been killed by cars and are lying on the side of the road as we drive past, or from loose feathers and parts of wings we find when we are out and about walking the moors, woodlands or coastline.
The leather we use is from Red Deer in Scotland, or cow hide, and the Rabbit fur is from rabbits which are culled as part of a wildlife management project in England.
