The dark was palpable. I’d sat with the Spirit of Castlerigg from sunset waiting for the spirit of place to speak to me. It took a while.
Eventually, three hours after the sun had set and when complete and utter darkness had clothed the land I knew it was time to begin taking the picture.
I couldn’t see the stones, I couldn’t see my camera, I couldn’t even see my hand in front of my face as I opened the shutter on my camera and prepared for a long wait as the few rays of starlight bounced off the land and the stones to create this rare image. It took hours, and hours more to tease the stones back to life when I got home to my study.
Castlerigg Night captures the voice of the place and shows that all is well even when we cannot see the way ahead. The land holds us through dark times and light.
A light wash of oil paint texture amplifies the voice of these ancient stones.
