18″ ‘Mead Full Moon’ Shamanic Drum. Red Deer with Sodalite crystal handle.

This is an 18-inch shamanic drum made from Red Deer rawhide and is a really special drum as it was birthed at the time of the ‘Mead’ Full Moon. Our Medieval English Ancestors called the Full Moon in July the Mead Moon. With mead being made from honey, we worked with the energy of Bee whilst birthing this drum and have painted a bee motif on the inside of the wooden hoop.

Bee is one of natures ultimate creators and this drum was made during the time when the creative powers of nature are strong. With this in mind, we have set a sodalite crystal in the handle, known as ‘the poets stone’, to enhance your creativity and inspiration.  The hoop is English Ash waxed with beeswax from rescued bees, and the tension ring is wrapped in suede with fluffy fabric finishing off the handle so that it is really comfortable to hold.

Bee is one of natures ultimate creators. Honey is an incredibly healthy food, containing enzymes, vitamins and minerals. It has a long history of medicinal use, being used as a remedy from hay fever to digestive disorders and its antiseptic properties lend its use as a dressing for wounds. Honey also lasts a very long time, with a 2,000-year-old jar of honey in an Egyptian tomb being reported to taste delicious when sampled by an explorer. So one of the overarching energies Bee brings with it is creativity.

Another quality Bee brings is organisation. A colony of honey bees survives because it is highly organised. Everyone has a specific role and this ensures the survival of the whole community. When we encounter the Red Deer in the wild, our breath catches and we are transfixed by their graceful features and delicate movements. We can draw on their energy to give us the power to deal with challenges with grace. As Red Deer holds a real gentleness, we can be sensitive and intuitive was we walk our path. We can also hold onto vigilance and also adaptability, with the ability to change direction quickly should we need to. Just as the deer has an uncanny sense of where to find the green freshness earth provides, we can ask the deer within ourselves to seek out our inner treasures.

About the making of this drum

We make our drums from our home on the edge of the West Pennine Moors in the northwest of England. We create the drums in sacred space each drum is birthed through ceremony, over mugwort incense.

We also take great care in the sourcing of our materials. The Red Deer hide used to make this drum is from Scotland and the timber for the Ash hoop is sourced from UK ash and is crafted by a local carpenter in Wigan. The wood has a layer of beeswax to bring out its natural grain. The wax is from bees which have been rescued.
