This is a 16-inch shamanic drum made from Reindeer Deer rawhide. It is a special drum as it was birthed at the time of the Celtic fire festival Samhain and the Full Moon that was also a Blue Moon.
This was the Hunter Moon, named by our ancestors who used the brightness of this moon to night-stalk the summer-fattened deer and fox across the recently harvested fields. This moon brings welcome light to the darkness.
We have painted a Crow motif on the inside of the wooden hoop. Crow for us is one of the animal’s that embodies Samhain energies. Crow, a messenger from the Otherworld, is associated with the mysteries and magic of this World. This compliments the moonstone crystal, which is a stone of mystery. The hoop is English Ash waxed with beeswax from rescued bees, and the tension ring is wrapped in suede with fluffy fabric finishing off the handle so that it is really comfortable to hold.
The energy of Samhain
Samhain is the festival of endings and beginnings marking the point in the wheel of the year where we drop into the long night of winter. Of all the old festivals, this one holds the most magic being the moment when the veil between the worlds is at its most thin.
The Celts saw death and darkness as important and necessary. As the trees are shedding their leaves and the last of the harvest has been brought in, this is a time of death and rebirth, of clearing and cleansing to make way for the new. Samhain is a time to choose those seeds that you are going to take through into the darkness to gestate. This is the time of rest and regeneration before rebirth.
The energy of rainbow moonstone
Moonstone is a stone of mystery, and is associated with the feminine because of its ability to enhance the intuitive side of the mind. It has been used for centuries to connect with the energy and power of the moon. Rainbow Moonstone emanates great vitality, life force and joy, and offer the gifts of inner peace and harmony, emotional balance and purification.
The energy of Reindeer
The Reindeer has an incredible ability to preserve in difficult environments, and across great distances too, some travelling as far as 3000 miles in one season. Their energy teaches us that great things are possible in our lives. In their surefootedness they can support us to utilize our internal gifts so that we can be as equally sure-footed in any situation, enabling us to easily walk through any challenges which may come our way as we walk our path to realize our dreams.
Guidance for choosing your drum
The 14″ drums are the most portable and tend to have a higher pitch than the larger ones. Our 16″ is often seen as a great compromise between transportability and depth of voice. The larger 18″ drum is a little heavier but usually has a deeper voice. However, each drum is very much an individual and can vary from what is expected.

About the making of this drum
We make our drums from our home on the edge of the West Pennine Moors in the northwest of England. We create the drums in sacred space each drum is birthed through ceremony, over mugwort incense.
We also take great care in the sourcing of our materials. The Red Deer hide used to make this drum is from Scotland and the timber for the Ash hoop is sourced from UK ash and is crafted by a local carpenter in Wigan. The wood has a layer of beeswax to bring out its natural grain. The wax is from bees which have been rescued.
